The great Hubert Fauntleroy Julian ( 1897-1983) ' BLACK EAGLE JULIAN '
Sometime in either 1959 or 1960 my sister who had crappy hair sent me to OLLIES, House of Texture, a dilapidated little retail store in Harlem on about 130th St. Ollies catered to the curley haired crowd both black and white and sold products such as Madame Foster's Bergamot, Javel Water and Pluto Elixir. These products would be applied to your head and burn the hair in order to straighten it. As soon as you felt the burning you put your head in the toilet bowl and flushed the toilet in order to cool your head off. Now this sounds strange but the world is a strange place and I have known people who ate corn starch out of the box. Now this is not the story of hair straighener or corn starch but of a chance meeting with a fine looking gentleman who was sitting on the fender of my car, a 1950 Mercury, which was parked in front of Ollies. Now, if this chap looked any different I would have said,' get the fuck off the car' but he was such an elegant looking gent, he triggered my interest as I am the type who enjoys the uncommon and he certainly looked out of place sitting on my fender. As I opened the door he immediately jumped to the ground and apologized. I told him it was quite alright , no damage, and he insisted he buy me a glass of orange juice...since I like orange juice we walked to the corner hot dog stand and had orange juice. Now as we walked I noticed people nodding to him women and men, those men wearing hats tipped their hats to him. a gesture of great respect if you know what I mean. The counterman would not take his money but said ' on the house Colonel' Let's make this story a short one. The man I met was none other than the great "BLACK EAGLE JULIAN' a living legend who was never heard of below 110th St. I visited with the Colonel a few more times during his lifetime in his apartment at 313 east 126th St. Now, your assignment is to go online and look up Hubert Fauntleroy Julian, or Black Eagle Julian. Mr Julian died in the Bronx unnoticed in 1983 and is buried in Suffolk County.... Hats off to the GREAT BLACK EAGLE !!!!!!! and if you happen to be in the Calverton Cemetary place a small flower on his grave
In May 1999 while in England, I traveled to Cambridge and wound up at Trinity College. I asked an undergraduate student on campus if he knew which building Isaac Newton studied in before leaving the college during the great Plague. Not only did he know but he took me to the building, we climbed the ancient stone stairs to an open archway which led down a hall to a classroom. He directed me to the chair that was used by Newton as an undergraduate and told me I could sit down in it. I did. This story stops here. |
