KARA WALKER; AFTER THE DELUGE / Publisher RIZZOLI
INTERNATIONAL PUBLICATIONS.
Kara Walker is the most unique
and inventive artists of the last 20 years. The book ' After the Deluge' published in 2007 in which the images
were made before KATRINA arose as a metaphor and response to the disaster.
Ms. Walker born in California in 1969 received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.
She has received the MacArthur Foundation Achievement Award. Her work is found at the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim and Whitney. Her genteel Victorian silhouttes graphically portray scenes of the antebellum
South. The images are 'unleashed' onto the walls of museums and galleries. ' After the Deluge' inspired by
the tragedy that beset the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, Walker has created a volume exploring the interconnnectedness
of the subject of the sea, race and poverty by juxtaposing examples of her work and historical works from the 19th century.
' After the Deluge' is a spectacular and important work that capitalizes on
Walker's deftness at graphic and visceral storytelling, sharing difficult themes the artist explores.
HEMINGWAY'S
BOAT / by Paul Hendrickson Publisher Alfred A, Knopf NY
In 1934 Hemingway bought a 38 foot motorized fishing vessel at a Brooklyn
boatyard and set out for the Caribbean. This
boat, The Pilar would offer the troubled
writer solace for the next 27 years of his life fishing, drinking
and carousing between
Cuba and Key West. These are the years he had lost favor with the critics, the love
of wives
and friends and ultimately his ability to write.
This book
draws on interviews, documents, his ships log and secondary sources
and brings to life the daily battles of a great American
writer. Even as Hemingway lashes
out at his critics and fires his shotgun angrily at the sea the author Hendrikson offers
the reader a glimpse into the life of a great man with great faults.
